Tip
$60.00 × 20% = $12.00
How to calculate a tip
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. A 20% tip on $60 is 60 × 20 ÷ 100 = $12, so the total is $72. Splitting it between three people, each pays $24.
Whether you tip on the amount before or after sales tax is your choice. On a $60 bill with $4.80 of tax, 20% of $60 is $12.00 and 20% of $64.80 is $12.96, so the difference is small.
Tips on common bills

|---|---|---|---|---|
| $20 | $3.00 | $3.60 | $4.00 | $5.00 |
| $40 | $6.00 | $7.20 | $8.00 | $10.00 |
| $60 | $9.00 | $10.80 | $12.00 | $15.00 |

| $150 | $22.50 | $27.00 | $30.00 | $37.50 |
Working out the tip in your head
- 10%: move the decimal point one place to the left. 10% of $47.50 is $4.75.
- 20%: double the 10%. 20% of $47.50 is $9.50.
- 15%: 10% plus half of it. On $60, $6 plus $3 is $9.
- 18%: 20% minus 2%. On $50, $10 minus $1 is $9.
- 25%: a quarter, so halve twice. On $80, half is $40 and half again is $20.
These shortcuts are the same ones that make any percentage easy; our guide to percentages in your head has more of them.
Splitting the bill
Add the tip to the bill first, then divide by the number of people. On $86 with a 20% tip, the total is $103.20, and four people pay $25.80 each. If you prefer round numbers, tick the box above: each share goes up to the next dollar, $26 here, and the tip grows by the difference.
